Rare, Victorian Copeland Ironstone ware teapot with textured relief pattern all over, a pewter lid with an ornate finial, and a production estimate of the 1860's-1870's. The rough orange peel like texture is created by the addition of salt into the kiln which creates the transparent glaze and the non smooth texture.
The antique Copeland Ironstone teapot features a raised, repeating pattern of stylized fleur-de-lis and a repeating geometric shape. These patterns were applied using a technique called "grotesque molding," which created raised or recessed designs on the teapot's surface. The pot and the lid are both in good order.
This antique Copeland salt-glazed teapot is a true treasure, & originated from Copeland's original building in Staffordshire England. The design of the Grotesque molding combines repeating geometric lines with curves on the sprouting fleur-de-lis, and the more romantic curves on the handle and spout.
